Not Cinderella But Close Enough

Princesses like cupcakes too :)
My Modern Touch
Today's post was inspired by a princess party I hosted at our church fundraiser.  Yes, I'm 20 years old and held a princess party which included my lovely princess guests who were 7.  Most people would roll there eyes at this but OMG was it fun! Hanging out with girls less then half my age brought me back down to earth... and back to the fact that every girl wants to be a princess! Cinderella was my favorite Disney princess growing up, obviously like any other normal person I dreamed of being Cinderella at Magic Kingdom.  Well Disney crushed my dreams by putting a height limit on princesses, thanks a lot Walt. Although I can't be an official Disney Princess, I can still dress like one, and so can you! Don't worry you don't have to step out wearing a crown and ballgown.  Here is a modern way to wear your invisible crown.  Start with something that's obviously princessy, ex. sparkly, fluffy, pink, whatever floats your boat.  I choose a pink tulle skirt.  Next add something to bring it into this century, ex. a leather jacket, combat boots, leggings.  And BAM your set! Of course not everyone want to a be a princess, but that's the beauty of fashion, it allows you to be exactly who you want to be, and on Sunday I wanted to be a punk rock princess, so I was.

Polished to Perfection!

To start off my blog I have a special shout out for my dad.  I received a text from him saying "hey I heard this old song tonight. I thought it would be cool for a fashionista like yourself. It's called puttin on the ritz..." (video attached below) I had a huge smile when I got this because that's one of my favorite songs, and when my dad heard it he thought of me :) I'm a farmers daughter who knows nothing about agriculture and he still loves me! I'm very lucky to have such a supportive family!  Ok now onto my post. I've been getting my nails done for as long as I can remember, an outing my mom and I have been doing since I was about six or so. I would compare myself to Elle Woods in terms of my deep love for manicures. Someone once told me that "its pathetic for a little girl to get her nails done," ahhh sorry honey but our values our vastly different. Getting manicures with my mother are some of my fondest memories, and why shouldn't they be? When your sad, frustrated, or anxious, a prescription for a mani-pedi is your perfect cure. Getting your nails done is one selfish act a women should never feel bad for. Some tips for picking your nail artist (yes they are artists!). If you're in a bigger town I always suggest going to the salon in the mall. Yes they tend to be more expensive but they are truly the best. I go to Lux Spa at West Acres and have never been disappointed, they are super quick too! About a month ago I started following Emma Roberts on Instagram because I like the fashion on the hit show American Horror Story, which she stars in. I saw a picture of her manicure (pictured below) and fell in love! In fact, two days later I went to salon and had them do the same thing for me. Now, please be selfish and go to the salon ;)

Saving Money and Mother Nature!

Think of a basic Hanes white T-shirt. Try to imagine how much work, effort, and natural resources go into making that t-shirt.  It takes on average 700 gallons of water to produce your basic t-shirt.  700 GALLONS! That's insane! I've always tried to live a green life, but my shopping habits certainly aren't helping.  I had no idea how big of an impact the clothing industry has on our planet.  How can you help in reducing your carbon footprint you ask? Lots of ways! There are plenty of things one can do in order to stay stylish and live a green life.  First try shopping at Plato's Closet or other gently used clothing stores.  While your at it, bring the clothes you don't wear and try to sell them! Might as well try to make some cash out of the clothes you don't wear! Of course hit up those summer rummage sales once this nasty winter is over.  And lastly, visit one of my very favorite places.......Savers! As you know from my previous post I made a vest out of an old $12 denim jacket.  I recently finished a pair of high waist-ed shorts, and polished up a couple men's denim button ups! I'm seriously obsessed with denim and wear a chambray/denim shirt once or twice a week.  I like to keep my stock of them on the up side so I went and checked out Savers.  Why men's shirts? There baggy, long, and usually super soft! With my savers member card (yes it exists, and you should get one) my shirt only cost $2.00 (plus a little bleach), and it's honestly my new favorite piece in my closet! No lie! Yay for saving money and the environment!

2014 Grammys: Hot or Hot Mess

Welcome to the 2014 award show season! Like most of the other award shows, I typically just payed attention to what the stars are wearing at the Grammy's.  Some hit it spot on, and others just looked a little sad, So lets talk about it! I've prepared Katie's picks for the best and worst dressed of the 2014 Grammy's.
Best
Beyonce wearing Michael Costello- Love love love this cut out lace gown! It's daring and sexy, but that's what Beyonce does best. I also love the short wavy locks, a change up from her long curls.  The Gothic red lips are so in this season, and go gorgeously with the white gown.   Photo found on fashionbombdaily.com

Next on my best dressed list goes to Robin Thicke.  Rarely does a man's Tux catch my eye, but his velvet Giorgio Armani number was to die for! Velvet is a staple for this winter.  I cant see many others pulling off this look, but Thicke
couldn't have done a better job. Photo found on eonline.com.  While I have this picture up I might as well mention one of my worst dressed.  Robin Thicke's wife Paula Patton is absolutely gorgeous, but I just can NOT stand this zebra/lion print dress.  Most of the articles I read loved this look, but I just cant! Zebra is so overdone.  I feel this would fit in more at a 2007 high school prom. Sorry that was a little harsh.

Ok back to the best! Ciara looked drop dead gorgeous in her gold Pucci gown.  Expecting celebs have been hitting the nail on the head when it comes to showing off their baby bump!   Photo found on huffingtonpost.com.  I had a hard time narrowing my last best dressed down but untimely it goes to Chrissy Teigen, wearing Johanna Johnson.  The wife of John Legend looked spot on in her metallic strapless gown, even stealing the attention from her super star husband!

Worst
Ok now lets finish off with who didn't quite have their act together.  Zandaya wearing Emanuel Ungaro.  The Disney channel star was not impressing anybody in this aqua blue poka dot frock.  First things first, it's not spring, that color should be in the back of her closet.  Also the poka dots just made it way to casual for the event. I just don't know what she was thinking. I can give her credit for gorgeous hair and makeup.
Skylar Grey wearing Michael Costello took a huge hit in my fashion handbook.  This latex nude number is just plan scary! I understand what she was trying to do but it was just way to much! I love form fitting and nude, but the cut-out, and her skin tone just took it way to far.  If it was in another color and fabric I would have gave her five stars. Photo found on instyle.com.  My last, but honestly not least worst dressed award goes to Ashanti.  Honestly its not to bad, but it just doesn't work for the occasion.  It's to short and I don't like the design on the dress.  If you look close enough the pattern kind of resembles organs......ew. Photo found on hollywoodreporter.com. Hope you enjoyed my latest post :) Tune in to the 2014 opening ceremony for the winter Olympics this week so you can check out Ralph Lauren's designs on your favorite athletes.
